Irena Sendler

Ink drawing of Polish Catholic social worker, Irena Sendler.
Sendler saved 2500 Jewish children, smuggling them out of the Warsaw Ghetto and providing them with false identity documents and with housing outside the Ghetto.
When the Nazis discovered her activities, tortured her, and sentenced her to death, but she managed to evade execution and survive the war.
She was awarded Poland's highest honor for her wartime humanitarian efforts. She was also nominated for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, but but did not win (Al Gore did).
She passed away May 12, 2008, at the age of 98.
